Whimsical and Colorful Spring Wedding at Greenhouse Loft

We love a couple who is not afraid to play with color and texture in their florals.  Alex and Aeryn came to us with a vision of a wedding that was colorful, woodsy and full of wildflower whimsy. Their inspiration came from quirky director, Wes Anderson, and more specifically his 2012 film “Moonrise Kingdom”. The film is about a preteen couple - Suzy Bishop and Sam Shakusky- who ran away together in the name of love and adventure. Sam is an experienced Khaki Scout who ran away from his camp troop to lead he and Suzy on a romantic outdoor escapade. It’s set on an island on the East Coast in 1965, and is full of charm, color, whimsy, and innocent love. Alex and Aeryn were inspired by this movie and turned it into a whimsical and summer camp nostalgia wedding theme that we absolutely LOVED! Take a look at these amazing photos of their spring wedding by Ed and Aileen Photography.

Alex and Aeryn chose Greenhouse Loft in Logan Square, Chicago as their venue, which was perfect for their outdoor/subtly camp-themed wedding. Greenhouse Loft has tons of natural light, and a green space right outside its windows, creating an outdoor feel while still being indoors. You never know with Chicago spring weather, so we don’t blame them for playing it safe and hosting their wedding inside!

Aeryn’s bouquet was loose and natural and full of texture. We included peonies, delphinium, feverfew, poppies, ranunculus, and snapdragons. Her bridesmaids carried similar, but smaller bouquets. Alex’s boutonniere was so fun to make. It was more like a pocket square than a typical boutonniere because the stems fit into the pocket.

For their ceremony decor, we decorated a hexagon arch that the bride’s dad made! We love how the flowers popped with bright color, and the greenery softly framed it. Their welcome sign held a subtle nod to “Moonrise Kingdom'“ – their names typed in the same font as the movie title. We put a little bit of soft greenery on top to make it feel outdoorsy.

We also provided a couple medium arrangements for their adorable guestbook table. Their “guest book” was in the form of a vintage telephone: guests were encouraged to pick up the receiver and talk into it, leaving them a heartfelt voice recording in place of a written message. We love how that went along with the nostalgic theme.

We were obsessed with the colorful, playful, and outdoorsy elements of their dinner table decor. Every item on the dinner tables was so thoughtful and full of charm. We provided mixed vintage clear bud vases with various floral stems, as well as some low centerpieces, held in ribbed clear compotes. The flowers looked so good next to the colorful and eclectic glassware and the adorable camping mugs they set out for each guest.

Some other dinner table decor they included were the cutest felt flags that said the names of some of their beloved places (and served as “table numbers”), yellow mini camp lanterns, and vintage books. Finally, each place setting had a slice of wood and guests’ names burnt into it with a little piece of moss on top. How freaking adorable is that?!

We topped their mini wedding cake with some bright blooms and we loved their little pet cake toppers!

We loved working on Alex and Aeryn’s wedding for many reasons, but one of them is because most (if not all) were some of Chicago’s best eco-friendly wedding vendors. We love working with other likeminded businesses to create a stunning wedding with a minimal eco footprint.

Cheers to you, Alex and Aeryn! Thanks for letting us take part in your special day.
